Old Jet Schmitt returned to the ring
Honolulu – Super Bowl ring has lost four decades ago, from Waikiki will soon return to the former New York Jets center John Schmitt.
KGMB-TV in Honolulu, Honolulu reports that the family wants to return to the ring to Schmitt, who won when the Jets upset the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 1969.
“That ring was found a damn miracle. It really is a miracle, you know,” Schmitt told the broadcaster.
Ring finger slipped Schmitt in 1971, taking surf lessons on the quarter-mile from Waikiki near the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. He had not noticed the ring was missing until he returned to shore.
“I had a snorkel and flippers and I went out and fell, until I was blue,” said Schmitt. “I’m not kidding you. It must be three hours. I was there to watch. I could not find it anywhere. I was just exhausted. I almost could not swim and a reflection of my feet. And I went to the broken.”
Waikiki lifeguard John Ernstberger find the ring and gave it to his wife, Mary, who put in a box, said Cindy Saffery, niece of the couple. Ernstberger died in 1990 and his estate went to Saffery and her husband, Samuel.
Saffery and recently he took the jewelry Brenda Reichel, to see if it was real.
Reichel, Carats of Fine Antiques & carat Jewelry & Collectibles, told the Associated Press on Friday that she was able to verify it was genuine. Gold ring in 14 carat diamond sign ringmaker, Schmitt number 52 and his name and score of Super Bowl and AFL championship.
Reichel and contact with the aircraft and Saffery were sent to Schmitt, who lives on Long Island. After several phone messages, they finally spoke on Wednesday, said Reichel.
“I could not believe it. I mean, honestly, I could not believe it. I mean 40 years,” said Schmitt.
