The concept of Diwali
Diwali is the greatest Hindu festival which is celebrated for five continuous days. The first day is Dhanteras, Second is Choti diwali, Third day is Badi or main Diwali festival, fourth day is celebrated as Govardhan Pooja and the last day is Bhaiya dooj. All these days have some or the other significance and are celebrated in different traditional ways. Choti diwali is also known as Narak Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas. There are legends about the same. Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated because Lord Krishna defeated and killed the demon Narsakasur and smeared his forehead with Narakasur’s blood. When he returned home the ladies welcomed him by oil manipulate and a holy bath to remove the blood and dirt and to purify and wind down his body. Since then it became a tradition of waking up early in the morning and bathe with ubtan and additional holy stuff.
Those who worship Maa kali celebrate this day as Kali Chaudas, Kali means black/dark and chaudas means fourteen. According to the hindu calendar choti diwali is celebrated on the fourteenth day of dark (Krishna Paksha) ashwin month. It is believed that Maa kali killed the wickedest on this day. Hence, people worship Maha kali or Maa Shakti. Some people celebrate this day as Hanuman Jayanti also, as it is believed that Lord Hanuman reached Ayodhya on this day to inform every body about the victory and frequent of Lord Rama. Well, whatever the belief is, the charm of the festival is the same. Apart from offering pooja people love exchanging diwali gifts on this festival and it is an old tradition as well.
