Tuning an Engine

Tuning an engine is basically the modification of internal combustion engines to bring forth the most favorable or advantageous performance, increase the power produced by the engine, promote better fuel economy as well as increase the durability of your vehicles. The term engine tuning can be used to refer to or describe an extensive list of adjustments and modifications that can be applied or done to a specific vehicle engine.

Performance Tuning

This is a type of tuning that focuses on engines for motorcycle racing, motocross or MotoGP and all other off road racing. This is what they typically call engine tuning for motorsports. Most of the cases with performance tuning are that people are into increasing the engine’s power output. Many of such cars never compete but rather are built to be showcased or just for leisure driving. The power output, torque, and responsiveness of the engine is always of superior importance. If cars treated under this are to be raced, the engine must be strong enough and able to resist or withstand stress. Given this context, reliability as well as fuel concerns like fuel economy and the ability to carry the sufficient amount would all be relevant.

Tune up

The term tune up often describes the routine servicing of the engine. The servicing would be according to manufacturer as to meet their specifications. They are commonly needed in a specific period of time following to the recommendations of the manufacturer to ensure that your vehicle will run as expected. This procedure may include, adjustments in the valve train, replacement of filters and spark plugs, checking of emission controls and many more. There is also something called Italian tune-up which is frequently done on Ferrari car models.

Chip Tuning

Most modern cars are equipped, well of course modern engines which has a management system called ECU (Electronic Control Unit) or EPROM diesel chip for some diesel engines. This tuning chip process is where tuning professionals modify or change EPROM chips or in some cars the ECU by petrol/diesel remapping.

An alternative to modifying the engine’s chip is through an external device known as the tuning box.
