Painting Tips for New DIY-ers

If you decide to a spot of DIY painting to brighten up or completely restyle all or part of your home, first make sure you have the right equipment for the job. While paint rollers and brushes are readily available from DIY stores and even supermarkets in a range of prices, these will often give an inferior finish and your walls and ceiling may look patchy. If you want a quality end result, and particularly if you have a lot of decorating to do either now or in the future, use professional paint rollers and brushes.

You should always start decorating a room with the ceiling. Although this is perhaps the most tedious and strenuous job, through having your arm in the air the whole time, it is also a messy job and starting with this first will protect your freshly painted walls from getting splashes. You also won’t need to bother about covering them up, although you will need to cover the floor and any furniture left in the room. It easiest to use a roller, and you can even use a handle extension if you don’t like heights. Start nearest the window (so you have natural light to see) and work in strips.

Walls can be painted with either a roller or a paint brush. If you decide to use a paint brush, start in the top corner on the same side as the hand you hold the brush in and paint blocks of around 500mm square. Work down the wall first and then across. Where possible, it is a good idea to use lining paper to paint on, as this will hide cracks and other blemishes in the wall. You can also paint directly on top of old wallpaper, although the end result is usually inferior.
