The Degree Requirements for a Funeral Director
Being a funeral director is not an easy job. It entails organizing and arranging everything necrological from the person’s death to the funeral until the burial itself. But, did you know that everything that your friendly funeral director is doing was learned and studied from college.
In order to become a professional funeral director, one must attain the respective degree requirements which allows the person to be trained in doing the business. One must be professional enough in exerting funeral director duties and responsibilities so clients always expect much from these directors.
These degree requirements are needed to become a funeral director:
Mortuary Science Degree
Those seeking a career as a funeral director must complete a degree program in mortuary science for a state license. Most degree programs offer two years while a few offer four years in mortuary science. The accepted minimum requirement is usually two years formal training to qualify for a license.
Internal Programs
The mortuary science program offers internal programs in anatomy, pathology, physiology, restorative techniques, embalming techniques, funeral home management, business management and accounting. Students must also complete programs in grief counseling and social sciences to work in the position. The subjects also include funeral service, business law and ethics to prepare for funeral home management.
Apprenticeship
Candidates for a license to work as funeral directors may be required to complete an apprenticeship program under the direction of a licensed funeral director. The apprenticeship may last at least a year, but, students may complete training before completion of a degree program. The apprenticeship program provides students with hands-on experience in the field.
Licensing Examination
The professional licensing board requires graduates to pass an examination to qualify for a state license. The examinations consist of a written test and a practical evaluation. The written examination tests the candidate’s knowledge of mortuary science practices and the practical portion requires the candidate to demonstrate his skills.
Your friendly funeral directors are proven to be highly skilled and professional since they have been through many exams and lectures in the field.
