What a Smart Car!

The next generation concept for the Smart Fortwo, called Forvision, has been unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show, and the city car looks set to shape up nicely with some particularly ‘smart’ new features. Now in its thirteenth year, the Smart Fortwo has had to up its game in order to complete with its younger, fresher city car competitors.

These new features include a funkier design comprising of bigger and bolder headlights, carved door panels, as well as sharper rear taillights. In addition to the sharper design, the new Smart Fortwo should be more efficient and considerably lighter in weight thanks to clever use of plastic for the wheel rims, making them each three kilograms lighter, as well as other developments. Smart is claiming that the next generation of ForTwo models could be up to 150 kilograms lighter in total than if traditional materials were used.

Other technological improvements include the use of specially developed insulating foams and heat reflective paints to help keep the cabin cool in the summer, whilst retaining precious heat in the winter months. Solar panels in the roof will help to power ventilation fans to cool the car. With all of this new technology on top, and the 55kw electric motor beneath, the ForTwo could run up to 105 miles on one charge, an increase from the current 87 miles.

These developments look set to make the ForTwo a serious contender for rivals VW Up! and Toyota iQ. Those looking to buy a new Smart ForTwo can hope to do so in about three years’ time when the concept is set to be released.
