Top Seven Computing Tips

These days, it is important to learn the fundamentals of computing. Once you familiarize yourself with these, you can move on to other important aspects like multimedia and various online solutions. For Windows Server 2008, here are computing tips to consider:

. Admins should set up a Server 2008 or Vista system so IT managers don’t need to individually monitor servers. This will make it easier to subscribe to certain events on various other Windows 2008 servers. You can do this by using Event Viewer in connecting to the system that you want to monitor and then select “Connect to Another Computer” in “Event Viewer Snap-in”. Once the events are logged, these will be forwarded real time.

. Avoid server downtime by enabling “TryNextClosestSite Group Policy” setting. This will help you connect to the next-closest DC when your network domain controller goes down.

. Set up multiple password policies. This is already possible in Server 2008. It will be easier for you to put more strict rules for various groups. Set up a few to ensure maximum flexibility.

. Prevent stickiness through “Use Group Policy”.

. Learn to track the elevating privileges of users. Take note that only the admin should have full-time admin privileges. Since there are other users who can elevate their privileges for specific tasks. You should keep track who’s doing this. What you can do is to enable “Auditing Process Creation”. This is a sub category of the detail tracking category of security auditing.

. Learn how to restore a Wizard. Take note that the Initial Configuration Tasks Wizard only appears the first time you log in. After that, it would vanish. Since it’s a handy tool for common initial tasks, you can just key in “oobe” in Run.

. Learn how to enable desktop features. For laptop running on Server2008, you can make it appear like a normal Windows system by going to START then choose SERVER MANAGER. Afterwards, click ADD FEATURES and check DESKTOP EXPERIENCE. Hit NEXT and INSTALL. After install, enable AERO LOOK and run .MSC. The next step is to right click THEMES, choose PROPERTIES then AUTOMATIC for start-up and START before hitting OK. Next, make a right click on your desktop, choose PERSONALIZE | WINDOWS COLOR & APPEARANCE. Choose WINDOWS AERO in the window that turns up then OK.
