Imitation Pearl Gems and the Tooth Test

There is a misconception that all cultured pearls are imitation pearls. This is totally a wrong opinion on pearls.

‘Cultured pearls’ are artificially grown or cultivated in the pearl farms by providing the necessary irritant and optimum living conditions for the pearl to take formation. Whereas, the imitation pearls are fake ones.

Perhaps one of the most famous types of imitation ones are ‘Majorca Pearls’ which are essentially solid glass beads covered with many coats of pearl essence and finished to a very high standard. These are often sold at higher prices than real ones.

The imitation pearls that are now available in the market resemble the original in appearance sometimes and are very cheap. In few cases, there is also a high chance that you spend high amounts of money by purchasing an imitation pearl by not knowing the fact. To avoid losing money on an imitation gem stone, you can check the quality of it by performing a tooth test.

The Tooth Test

This is a simple yet efficient quality check for a pearl. When performed with attention, we can easily recognize if the gem stone is real or an imitation. Rub the pearl against your tooth and if you feel like rubbing a sandpaper, Voila! It is real. Though this test is not 100% fool proof, this passes as a quick, easy and a basic test to check the quality of a pearl. Remember that, though a real one feels like grainy substance, it is super smooth in appearance.
