Preparing For Winter
With summer fading into our rear views and colder weather looming over the horizon, many are advising us to invest in winter tyres. The UK has experienced weather conditions that it hasn’t seen for over thirty years, according to the Met Office, meaning caution on the road is all the more important.
Winter tyres offer drivers huge safety benefits, reducing stopping distances in snow and being made of a rubber compound that retains its softness and pliability in temperatures of under seven degrees centigrade. When braking on sheet ice from a speed of 12mph, the average stopping distance for winter tyres was found to be 12.5 metres, compared to 19 metres for summer tyres.
Despite this news, 85% of British motorists didn’t even attempt to switch to winter tyres last year, which has led manufacturers such as Audi to offer packages to encourage drivers to invest in the tyres. Audi is offering winter tyre sets as well as wheel-and-tyre sets that are designed to improve performance in the snow.
Audi’s wheel-and-tyre sets consist of 16- to 19-inch alloy wheels and tyres with improved grip and a tread pattern that optimises water displacement. The tyres are capable of providing a better performance on not only snow, but also ice and slush, and are available for all the cars across the range.
