Research on African Mangoes and weight reduction

African mango is fast becoming more and more famous for its ability to decrease weight. Is this a spam or is it a fact? Let us examine.

African mango – background

African Mango, scientifically called irvingia gabonensis is a fruit grown in Africa and some parts of India and Ceylon. Traditionally, for centuries, it was used for obesity and in Aurvedic medicines. Recently it became popular after Dr. Mehmet Oz featured it in his award winning TV show ‘The Dr. Oz Show’, in 2010 September. He named it ‘break through supplement’ and ‘a miracle in your medicinal cabinet’.

The health benefits of African Mango

The extract of African mango can be taken as a supplement and it is known to decrese body weight faster, and in a natural and safe manner. Moreover, it is much cheaper than many other methods for reducing weight including the costly pills and surgery procedures.

Research done on African Mangoes

Recently the journal ‘Lipids in Health and Disease” published a research paper where the effect of using African Mango is studied and recorded. The researchers did a double blind experiment with 72 obese persons. The participants were randomly divided into three equal teams. The first group was given a placebo, an empty pill without any medicinal value. The second group was given only supplement of Cissus quadrangularis. Cissus quadrangularis is an ancient medicinal plant in the grape family, whose extract was traditionally used for medicinal purposes and to reduce weight. The third group was given a combination of Cissus quadrangularis and Irvingia gabonensis. Irvingia gabonensis is nothing but African mango. The participating groups were given 2 pills every day containing either placebo or CQ extract or CQ+IG extract. This study was conducted for ten weeks. During this time, the participants were following their own life styles without any significant change other than taking these pills.

The research outcome

The results are very surprising.

After 4 weeks, there was not much effect on the placebo group. The second group taking CQ, reduced the body weight by 1.33 per cent and the third group using the combination of CQ and IG, lost their average weight by 2.1 per cent.

After a duration of 8 weeks, the placebo group lost 1.33 per cent body weight, CG group lost 7.53 per cent and CQ+IG group lost 8.82 per cent.

After 10 weeks, the end of the experiment, the placebo group lost 2.1%, CG group lost 8.82% and CQ+IG group lost 11.86 % of their average weight.

As evident from these results, while CG significantly improved the weight reduction, the addition of IG or African mango made it even more effective.

The researchers also measured the change in body fat and waist line of participating people.

At the end of 10 weeks, the placebo, CQ and CQ+IG groups lost body fat of 4%, 14.6% and 20% respectively, clearly indicating the action of African Mango.

For waist line, the change is even more significant. For the three groups respectively the waist line reduced by 1%, 8.6% and 20% after ten weeks.

In terms of actual values, the waist line reduced by 16 cms (or more than 6 inches) at the end of the experiment for the third group.

More health benefits

The study team also recorded that there is a good reduction in bad LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride as well. In addition even the blood sugar levels also decreased by using these extracts. No wonder many people who have used the supplement of African mango extract got similar results. The research also showed that using African Mango did not have any significant side effects.
