Tata Merlin coming on September 27?
The upcoming Tata Merlin SUV is said to be a standby option for Tata Motors’ until an all new and improved Tata Safari platform is developed. Most of the new Tata
Products have sought a clear distinction from the older Tata products in the same way; The Tata Merlin SUV too is expected to dump the Safari moniker and therefore
simply sticking to the Tata Merlin SUV name.
It looks like the Merlin SUV has taken a lot of brainwave from the various Land Rovers. From the flared headlamps housing projectors on the flatter front to the
flattish rear, Land Rover’s design idea undoubtedly seems to be stirring the Tata Motors’ design team; nevertheless it is not a bad thing to do.
Taken as a whole, the Merlin looks quite up-to-date given that the platform which it is based on is more than a decade old. Mechanically, the Merlin SUV is expectedto come with the same 2.2 Liter DICOR engine generating 140 Bhp of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque, with the major change being that the Merlin may get the dualmass flywheel that makes for a smoother engine and better gear shifting. TataMerlin price is not yet disclosed.
The Tata Safari Merlin is expected to stay with the 7 seat layout with the two sideways facing jump seats housed in the boot of the SUV. While one wishes for
improvements in finishing of the interiors, it would be interesting to see whether Tata actually steps up the gas on the interiors front. The viscosity of will be seenin the future Tata Merlin review.
The Tata Merlin SUV may be launched on the 27th of September to counter the Mahindra XUV500 SUV. If not on this date, there is a big chance that Tata will launch
the Merlin SUV, at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo.
