The Womb and the Issue of Child Obesity

Obesity has now become the USA’s medical obstacle being faced that the First Lady has already moved to help. Here is a new study about one of the causes of obesity.

In a graphical map sourced from Wikipedia on the topic obesity, it was shown that from 1961 until 2004 there was an observable increase in the energy consumption of the world with the United States being the world’s key energy consumer. On one angle, the map would also speak about the food intake of the world with an average in 1961 to an increased volume in 2004. Thus this prompted researches and the practitioners in medical scrubs to state that the levels of the calorie intake and food intake are directly relative to obesity. Thus studies about the real cause of or the preventive measures for obesity have been intensified further.

On the viewpoint of pathophsysiology, there had been several factors that have been introduced that affect this medical condition the most recent discovery would be that leptin in 1994. Neurons’ movements and reactions as well as the attributes of the hypothalamus are also a consideration in tackling the issue of obesity. Further researches and studies made by the medical people and scientists in medical scrubs proved that there are several factors that can affect obesity of a person and the most recent study suggested that obesity and pregnancy may have a direct relationship with each other. In the study published in Time.com, it says that it could be possible that obesity could have well started even the child is still in the mother’s womb thus the food intake and weight gain of a mother will transit a negative effect on the baby’s physical condition that in this context, the baby’s weight and body mass with respect to obesity.

The study was focused on the pregnancies and births that occurred since 1989 to 2003. The main indicators that the study used here were the maternal weight during pregnancy and the weight of the infant after it has been born. The research used the records of some 513,501 mothers and their 1,164,750 children born in a span of 15 years. Excluded however in the research are those mothers with gestational diabetes and prematurely born babies. The result of the study was so overwhelming that the researchers were able to slightly conclude that when a mother gains weight during pregnancy more than that what is allowable weight increase can tend to an increase in an offspring’s possibility of obesity. To put it more accurately, the result showed that a mother with 53 lbs. weight gain is more likely to give birth to a heavier babies as compared to those women who just managed to increase weight around 18-22 lbs.

The tipping point however was that, the study does not cover some important factors that could have well affected the result. The babies’ weight was just recorded during birth and there was no indication that later after 5 or 15 years if there had been any changes in the weight of the children born.

Just a thought though, the other side of the world suffers from malnutrition and hunger where food lack. This dwells on a fact that whatever we take for ourselves and we take it on the extreme scheme then it can possibly be bad and dangerous.
