The Bloop: What is it and where did it come from?
Since the second half of the twentieth century, science has progressed and developed at an enormous rate. That said, whilst technology has come on in leaps and bounds, we are still no way near closer to understanding exactly what is going on in the world around us. Since around 71% of the world’s surface is covered by oceans, you may have thought that we are familiarly acquainted with our planet, but you would be wrong. We are no closer to understanding the mysteries of the deep than we are to being able to predict the horse racing betting odds.
Out of all the strange goings on under the sea, one has baffled scientists more than any other. In 1997 the U.S National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (otherwise known as the NOAA) picked up a strange sound which is now known by the onomatopoeic name ‘the Bloop’. The sound was an extremely loud and powerful noise that was emitted at an ultra-low frequency, yet its origins remain unknown.
There has been a lot of speculation about the source of the noise, but seriously, you would be better off trying to figure out the horse racing odds! The one thing that they no for certain about the noise is that it is definitely not man made and that it is reminiscent and characteristic of a sound made by an animal. The only problem with this is that the noise was emitted five times louder than any sound emitted by the loudest known animal the Blue Whale. So what huge beast could have produced such a sound?
Naturally, many H.P Lovecraft fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was the sounds of the Dark Lord Cthulu, but scientists were a obviously a little apprehensive to accept this theory. Another popular belief about the Bloop amongst fundamentalists is that it is the sound of the biblical Leviathan which is said to surface from the deeps at the advent of the apocalypse. Whatever it is, scientists are sure to keep investigating for the foreseeable future!
