Why Does Buddhism Allow Betting?

The First Noble Truth – acknowledging your predicament and accepting that yours is a state of suffering.

You have to identify that you have a problem in the first place before you embark on trying to resolve the problem.

The first Noble truth is the based on the acceptance that there is suffering in the world and it can be seen or felt in negative events such as sickness and death. It can also be seen and felt through our understanding and appreciation of our positive and pleasurable experiences. In other words that which is positive and pleasurable is recognised only because we also recognise that which is negative and not pleasurable – suffering in this context. The transient nature (not necessarily in equal measures) of suffering and pleasure enables us to appreciate the existence of both.
The Second Noble Truth – locating the source of the problem (your suffering) and its nature.
You have to acknowledge and accept that suffering originates from the lack of mental and spiritual peace caused by your craving – for sensual pleasures, existence and non-existence.
The first sort of craving is directed at sense objects we crave to acquire for the pleasant feeling we gain from having them. In other words, the craving of sensory pleasures. The second is the craving of what we don’t have. The third is the craving of what we don’t want to have.
The second and third can both be related to what we desire/wish to have or not have. For example, I want to be rich. I don’t want to be poor, or I want, not to be poor. The want can be replaced with ‘crave’. The total lack of craving is a state of complete self-sufficiency and self-contentment. The presence of craving on the other hand keeps beings in Samsara, in perpetual flux of always wanting, craving, wishing and therefore never satisfied or at peace. It is the eternal cycle of rebirth which leads to eternal suffering.
A Buddhist who understands his faith well has nothing to fear from betting sites like American football odds or NFL betting or even working in casi.nos.
