Copywriting (Castles without Foundations are rubble in the sand.)
Everything anyone ever does is learned. We can learn through trial and error, take our time, stumble through things. Often experience is the best teacher, but when you can learn from a master you can get past many of those stumbling blocks.
It’s like handing a basketball to someone who has never heard of the game and telling him to become an NBA champion. Sure they’ll probably understand that the basic idea of the game is to get the ball through the hoop, but without some form of coaching, some basic reference to put it on, is it possible for them even to learn the game?
No.
You must have some basis to start on in sports, in relationships, and especially in writing.
When it comes to copywriting there’s hundreds of self proclaimed ‘Experts’ and I have nothing to say about them. Many of them are even quite good, but do you think they got there without something to build on?
Never.
You can’t build a castle without a foundation.
So how do we build that foundation?
1. Start paying attention – Every day you are inundated with sales letters. When one catches your eye, stop and really look at it. What works with it? What doesn’t? Was it the Headline that got your attention?
2. Practice – You will never become good at anything until you practice. Some of the best copywriters in the world spent hundreds of hours taking the sales letters they’d saved and writing them out word for word. My suggestion is to do this for fifteen minutes a day. After reading a hundred or so and studying what makes them work you will begin to see them in a completely different way and when you write your own you’ll know what works and what doesn’t.
3. Take a course/Find a mentor – Having someone show you the way will save you a ton of time and money.
? Finding a mentor isn’t always the easiest thing to do, but there are forums where many people are willing to mentor others. One of these is called the Warrior Forum. Just make sure when you join such forums that you’re taking advice from people who actually know what they’re talking about. Many times you can sense this in the way in which they reply to posts and by the websites attached to those posts.
? A course is another great way to learn. Courses were built specifically to help people learn. They can teach you the basics to an obscure tip that will make conversions soar. Courses aren’t just for beginners. With the quick pace the world changes in you have to continue learning or you fall behind. Spending money on the six inches between your ears is an investment worth making.
Building your foundation will take time. It doesn’t happen overnight. But as each stone gets set in place you’ll be able to build the castle you’ve always dreamed of, and won’t have to see it crumble to dust.
