A Look At The Teen Job Situation For 2010
You may be surprised, but if you’re a teenage this is the time to be lining up jobs for the coming summer. Since you’ll have some heavy competition, you want to be checking out what’s available as well as making sure you have your name in front of people for a job this summer. It’s a given the economy is tight, so there might not be as many jobs to pick and choose from, and anyone who starts applying early will have a definite head start on everyone else. Don’t take anything for granted this summer – there’s going to be a lot of competition for all the available jobs and you’ll be smart to do some research and be contact potential employers now.
Young teens should find some form of work, but know that large established businesses are not likely to hire them. For example, teens around 13 or 14 should expect jobs such as helping neighbors with outdoor work or chores. This age bracket should also consider looking into pet walking, babysitting, or other similar types of jobs that neighbors may want fulfilled.
A younger teen, who has a reputation of being responsible and personable, should have no problem finding neighbors that are more than willing to pay for having work done around their house and yards. The more satisfied “clients” a teen has, the more contacts and success they will have. It’s just important to remember at a young age the goal is to find someone who will pay for jobs that are not too challenging.
Older teens between the ages of 16 to 18 often have very little experience, and are trying to gain the same jobs that older, more experienced workers are targeting. Due to the recession, this past year has shown adults taking employment that they would have never considered prior. This poses a particular difficulty for teenagers and young adults as they often have little experience to offer.
2010 is looking to be very similar to 2009 in terms of employment, especially as the economy has yet to improve. As long as companies continue to have difficulty with their margins, jobs seekers, regardless of age, will continue to have trouble finding employment. Teenagers are among an especially hard hit group as they lack skill sets employers are looking for, leaving them untried with no track record of experience to demonstrate.
