Resorts in Jamaica by MyReviewsNow
Jamaica is a small island nation in the Caribbean with a strong international presence. The birthplace of legendary musician Bob Marley, Jamaica has brought us reggae music, mouthwatering Jamaican jerk chicken, and a slew of Olympic track and field stars. Also the setting for several James Bond novels, one quickly realizes there’s got to be something quite special and worth checking out in Jamaica. Many resorts in Jamaica are famous for their all-inclusive benefits, letting you forget about the details and focus on enjoying your vacation.
Jamaica’s capital is Kingston, which is home to the Bob Marley Museum, Port Royal (known as “the richest and wickedest city in the world” during its 17th century pirate heydey), and the country’s National Gallery. About three miles above Kingston, high in the mountains, sits Strawberry Hill. Regarded by many as Jamaica’s only provider of ultraluxury accommodations, Strawberry Hill is a boutique property with private 19th century Georgian bungalows overlooking Kingston. Even if you can’t afford a room, consider its well-known Sunday brunch featuring their own strawberry champagne. Inexpensive lodging can be found at Liguanea Club, a no-frills Kingston hotel highly regarded for its clean rooms and comparatively nice amenities for the budget price. Resorts in Jamaica‘s Kingston area tend to be business-oriented, and are thus rarely all-inclusive.
Montego Bay, at the northwest end of the island, is home to the island’s largest airport. It’s definitely the island tourist hotspot, but for good reason given its continuous, beautiful beaches and a backdrop of low-laying mountains. You can opt to relax and raft down the tree and wildlife-surrounded Martha Brae River or people watch at the famous (and crowded) Doctor’s Cave Beach. Resorts in Jamaica’s Montego Bay area are abundant, from all-inclusive super resorts to B&Bs off the beaten path. Iberostar Grand Rose Hall is not only the most popular resort in Montego Bay, it’s probably the most well known of all the resorts in Jamaica. This hotel is actually three hotels, each all-inclusive: the Beach Club, Suites, and Grand. Each level has increasingly upgraded rooms and more extensive amenities. The Grand level is adults-only, with access to multiple pools and outdoor cabins along the beach. Sandals, a well-known all-inclusive style resort, also has a popular Montego Bay location known as Sandals Carlyle Inn. This hotel is famous for its hospitable staff; don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a hug and everyone seems to know your name. Polkerris a highly rated B&B in the area, popular with honeymooners or anyone trying to avoid the crowds. It has high quality rooms, service and a quiet residential street location for those looking for an alternative to the more prevalent mega-resorts.
If you’d like to get away from the major hubs of Kingston and Montego Bay, Negril may be a good choice. On the western tip of the island, Negril is close enough to Montego Bay to have its fair share of resorts, but retains a bit more charm than its more well-developed sister cities. Blue Hole Mineral Spring is the vicinity’s most popular attraction. It is essentially a mineral spring that you can jump into, falling 25 feet in the process. If you’d rather not take the dive, an adjacent swimming pool is filled with the spring’s water. Negril’s northern area has a bevy of all-inclusive resorts, nearly all highly-rated for impeccable service and great beachfront locations.
To truly get away from the resort scene, areas in St. Elizabeth Parish on Jamaica’s southern coast provide an ideal combination of local charm, relaxing beaches, and natural adventure. Idlers’ Rest Beach Hotel in the historic Black River fishing area is billed as the anti-Montego Bay: no ultra resorts here. A small boutique hotel fronted by an often-deserted strip of beach, this hotel is a great base camp for the area’s attractions. Zip-lining near YS Falls is a popular adventure, as is touring a rum estate at Appleton Estate Rum Tour.
