Black Edition – head for the dark side

The Mazda2 is currently one of the supermini market’s most-loved cars thanks to its distinctive styling, agile handling and nippy performance, so you would have thought the sinisterly-named ‘Black’ edition of the city car favourite would be more of the same but just a bit better. And you’d be right. Just.

Sure, performance isn’t crazily different, if at all, and you’re still not going to be able to navigate your way up the Scottish highlands with it, but the tweaks on styling make a real difference to the overall feeling of the car.

Diamond-cut Matt Black alloys give the exterior of the car a real feeling of it meaning business and other additions such as the four-cylinder headlamps, rear bumper trim and black decaled roof certainly make you feel as though you’re driving something a touch more special than the standard model.

Inside there’s a little plaque telling you, and maybe more importantly people that you’re trying to impress, what limited edition number it is (they’ve only made 618), as well as a piano black centre console and sports seats (black, of course) with cheeky red piping. Automatic air conditioning, MP3 connectivity and a Bluetooth thing that lets you look like a traveling salesman are also nice touches.

It costs £12,353 (well over two grand more than the base model), but the amount of extra features on the Black shouldn’t make you feel short changed if you’re really after a supermini and have the extra money to spend. Saying that, the 1.3litre power unit only allows a 0-60 time of 13.6 seconds and a top-end of 106mph, so probably best to steer clear if you’re looking for a bit more bang for your buck.
