Cheap thrills

When buying a car it can be quite easy to get bogged down by the ‘reasons’ you are actually buying it in the first place. Got a family or a collection of massive dogs? You need a people carrier. Live on a farm or pebble beach? You need a rugged 4×4. But sometimes you just want some unadulterated driving please; to wake up on a Sunday morning and go for a drive for the sake of it. People generally think it’s mission impossible, especially if they have a collection of massive dogs, but owning a second (or third) just for the sake of it being nice to drive needn’t be as expensive as you think.

Let’s take one of my favourites – the Alfa Romeo GTV Spider. Practical? Nope. Reliable? Not really. Beautiful? Yes. Cheap to buy and enjoy for a year or two? Definitely. You can pick up a decent enough late-nineties example for £1,500 quid and, if you’re not 17, shouldn’t cost the Earth to insure. Yes, taking a modern classic out for a spin when time allows is one of life’s little pleasures, but if you have lots of other commitments it’s not really worth breaking the bank to do – especially as there’s so many cheap thrills to be had out there.

If you do have a few extra quid then another option is the irrepressible Mazda MX-5. As a prime example of how the convertible car has evolved over the years you can’t really go wrong with Mazda’s flagship classic, it and really comes to life when you ask no more of it than to make you enjoy driving for a bit.

Sure, forking out for a new convertible car when you’ve got loads of massive dogs to think about may be a difficult thing to think about at first, but remember how excited you felt when you first passed your driving test? Yeah, it makes you feel like that.
