Hanging Planter

If you’ve turned on the TV in the past two years, you’ve probably seen the commercials for the Topsy Turvy fruit and vegetable planters. These planters are designed to grow even the large plants, such as full sized tomatoes, in small spaces. Best of all, all the growing is done off the ground in a hanging planter. This is perfect for urban gardeners living in small apartments with limited growing room, or even last minute gardeners who would like to add some extra plants to their already jam packed growing area.

The Topsy Turvey planters themselves can be expensive. They also don’t work as well as advertised due to the cloth lining which dries out the soil. This hasn’t stopped others from jumping on the companies garden ideas though.

You can make a simple hanging planter at home using a two liter bottle, hole puncher, scissors, knives and some string or twine.

Place the two liter bottle upside down so the lid is pointing down. Start by cutting the bottle in half using a sharp knife or scissors. Discard the bottom part of the bottle, and punch two holes into the side without the lid. Loop a piece of string or twine in these holes. Use a knife to cut a few small holes in the side of the bottle. This will be for drainage, so your plants don’t die if they’re over watered.

Unlike the Topsy Turvy plants, you’re not going to plant the seeds in the bottom of the bottle, but rather the top. Make sure the lid to the bottle is screwed on tightly, then fill the bottle with potting mix. Water the soil throughly, then plant your seeds.

Growing herbs or other small plants is best for garden ideas that involve growing in small spaces. Basil, oregano, tarragon and mint to particularly well. Mint is especially good to plant in a hanging container due to it’s invasive nature.

Plant Markers

If you have the opposite problem of growing too much in a much large space, using plant markers is one of the many great garden ideas to try. All too often people plant a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers, then lose track of where everything is. Because most seedlings look the same when they first start growing, it can be very challenging figuring out what is what. This can be even more frustrating if you’ve planted seeds that require very different care, for example, watermelon and lavender. Both plants grow around the same time, but lavender shouldn’t be watered much while watermelon thrives in wet conditions. Without the proper care, both plants would die.

Fortunately, that won’t be the case when up-cycling items around your home to make plant markers. These markers can be made out of any household item, though its most common to use wooden items, such as paint stirs or popsicle sticks.

If you’ve been gardening for a while, however, you’ve likely broken a few clay pots in your day. Instead of throwing the pieces away, they can be used for additional garden ideas such as this one. Simply write the name of the plant on the pieces of broken clay or wooden stakes. Permanent marker is great for this and won’t fade during watering. Once the clay or wood has been marked, stick the ends into the ground. Now you will always remember where your plants are.
