Rangey Sport – what engine should I choose?
The first Range Rover Sport rolled off the Solihull production line in 2005 and immediately became a hit with punters looking for some Land Rover heritage with the added bonus of a decrease in size for easier city driving.
Due to the very nature of the tradition of the brand power came as standard in all models, but over the years there have been quite a few variations of power units provided with the Sport. Refined power and superb driving dynamics are the hallmarks of Range Rover Sport engines, and the range enables you to handle whatever your journey may throw at you, from open roads to some of the most rugged off-road terrain. Here’s the breakdown of the current crop of Range Rover Sport engines…
3.0litre TDV 6
The smaller capacity Range Rover Sport engines such as the current 3.0litre TDV 6 version is anything but a slouch. Getting to 60mph from standing takes well under nine seconds and has plenty of torque so it really feels as though you’ve got some extra power when you need it. You’ll also see 25.2 mpg in urban surroundings and 34.9 out of town. The Co2 figures for the TDV 6 are very reasonable as well at 243g/km.
5.0litre V8 Supercharged
The biggest of the current crop of Range Rover Sport engines, this V8 Supercharged monster is not for the faint hearted. 0 – 60mph takes a measley 5.9 seconds and will go on to reach a top speed of 140mph. Obviously, fuel economy goes down with this bigger engine; managing just 19.0mpg on the combined cycle and a wallet-busting 13.0 around town. Great fun, just be prepared to pay for it!
If you’re looking for no holds barred fun then the V8 petrol is probably the one to go for, but if you’re the type of person who likes to keep away from the pumps as long as possible (and let’s face it, who isn’t), then the diesel provides a very good, and much cheaper, alternative.
