A Closer Look At Room Air Conditioners
Available in two forms, room air conditioners are sold as ‘unitary’ and ‘packaged terminal’ (PTAC) systems.
The unitary systems, the most common single room air conditioner, is placed within a window or opening in a wall with the controls on the interior.
The air is cooled as a fan filters/blows it through the evaporator, whilst on the exterior, the air is heated as a separate fan filters/blows the air over the condenser. Ultimately, the heat is drawn from the room and expelled outside, i.e. the exterior.
Whilst the PTAC systems are also known as wall split air conditioning systems or the more commonly used PTAC systems in hotels, have two separate units.
First, there is the evaporative unit on the interior and the condensing unit on the exterior. By way of tubing, which passes through the wall and connects them, this reduces for each separately air conditioned room to be controlled independently.
