Manufacturing industry and the global market

The Manufacturing industry in the United Kingdom has gone through a number changes since the early 70’s. In more recent years the world biggest recession the manufacturing has seen one of the biggest downfalls with the percentage of companies operating the Secondary sector.

Industry can be dived in three primary sectors; Primary industries, Secondary industries, Tertiary industries. The UK manufacturing industry is classified as a Secondary industry since it is classed as a business that takes raw materials and produces a finished product. Examples of this industry include steel manufactures, plastic companies and food processing companies. Employees in the UK that work in this sector are classified as working in the secondary sector of the market.

The percentage of companies operating in the manufacturing industry is falling by the year, as a large number of companies sending their production overseas to countries such as China and India due to the cost the work force. There are number of companies that still operate within the UK market, these companies remain competitive within the UK by operating effectively and employing production techniques such as “just in time”. These types of methods as well as improvements in supply chain methods and product are keeping the UK manufactures competitive. Also because the cost of shipping is reduced and the product is well managed it has seen industries within the Secondary sector starting to perform well.

An example of this is the car manufacturing sector, as large companies still operate their main product out of a UK base. These type of companies support smaller subsectors such as plastic companies, fabric makers and industries that support the main product of the product. This type of out sourcing has seen the main company becoming more cost effective and streamline through out sourcing to other sectors.

In summary if companies remain streamlined and keep improving their production methods the UK manufacturing sector can remain competitive for large multinational organisations. Also the government has backed a scheme to try and increase the number of companies operating in the secondary sector. With this type of government backing of large multinational companies the industry will grow with new supporting companies such as plastic manufactures will continue to be created to support these large organisations. Also this type of backing, improved production methods will see a small improvement in the UK Secondary Sector, although steps are being taken to ensure the future of the manufacturing industry, it will never reach the heights of the 70’s, and it seems that apart from the competitive companies the UK is set to operate in the Tertiary service sector for the foreseeable future.

A large portion of the UK manufacturing industry work with plastics, such as Polyurethane. Injection Moulding is one of the most significant contributors to the global market.
