Review of the Geovision GV-900 DVR Card
We recently had the opportunity to test and evaluate the newly released Geovision GV-900A DVR Card. Last week as soon as we heard about it, we called the California office and had them send us a couple for our technicians to connect, install and check for anything new. To give you a little history, back in 1999 and 2000, Geovision used to have several different models and styles of DVR Cards that are not available today. You had the GV-150, GV-200, GV-250, GV-750 GV-500 as well as the GV-900 DVR Cards. Now the thing about these old and discontinued dvr cards is that it was very long and full of electrical components. These were the original dvr cards that Geovision used to produce when there was no real direction in the digital video surveillance market. It was nothing really special since that like all other Geovision dvr cards, the FPS is the only thing that is different between them all.
Back then, when you would build a DVR Card system, you really had to be mindful of the system requirements since there were more incompatible PC components on the market. However, technology has progressed to a more stable system that makes it much easier to build a reliable surveillance system. Now that Geovision has re-introduced the GV-900 dvr card back onto the market, there are some obvious changes that they’ve made. One thing that you will notice when you are looking at the GV-900 dvr card is that it has considerably less circuitry on the dvr card. In our opinion, it is a very small dvr card with just 2 microchips in the center of the card. The key design element of the new GV-900 is that it will offer the customer 32 channels of video input on one card while recording and displaying at 240 Frames Per Second.
Now when we heard about this. basically that the card just offers 32 channels of video input at 240 FPS, we really did not think that this was important enough to merit the release of a new product. The reason for this is that you can still get 32 channels of video if you stack, or add (2) Geovision dvr cards into one PC. However, we found that the price is much lower if you buy just one GV-900 DVR Card instead of buying (2) dvr cards in order to get that 32 channels of video recording. Also one of the other major things about the new GV-900 dvr card is that it uses the Sandy bridge chipset which is supposed to decrease the CPU resources while boosting the Geovision DVR Cards performance.
Now I’m going to tell you what I really think about the new GV-900A dvr card. This is the deal. It is just another Geovision dvr card that allows you to use up to 32 channels of video on just one card. And it does this without making you buy (2) separate dvr cards. All of the software features and functionality is all the same and nothing has changed. The “New” thing about this dvr card is that it will save you money when buying just one GV-900 card instead of needing to buy two separate cards. That’s it! Pretty boring huh? Anyway, if you are in the market to save some money and get a 32 channel dvr card then the Geovision GV-900 just might be the thing for you.
