Effective Winter Maintenance for Improved Health and Safety

Salt spreaders allow for easy spreading of salt over large range quickly and efficiently. In the UK main roads are gritted using large salt spreading vehicles by government funded local councils. However it is a growing trend for organisations to use salt spreaders to grit private property in particular areas such as footpaths and car parks. This allows many businesses to operate more effectively during the winter and greatly reduces the risk of injury from slipping on ice on the ground. There are a range of different types of salt spreaders available and these can generally be categorised in to two main types; vehicle mounted salt spreaders and hand push salt spreaders. Vehicle mounted spreaders are more suited to spreading salt over large areas such as roads and large car parks. Hand push spreaders are used for spreading over smaller surface areas such as footpaths.

For de-icing purposes there are two types of salt that are used; traditional rock salt and white de-icing salt. Traditional rock salt is more readily available and is a mixture of salt and grit material for traction. White de-icing salt is a more purer, environmentally friendly de-icing product. The salt is mined and bagged for distribution.

Whilst grit salt bins serve a similar purpose to salt spreaders, however their method is very different. Grit is stored in the bins with the purpose of it being spread when it is needed. For public use grit bins the grit bins are often provided by local authorities as a self-help method with the aim of the public using them to grit roads and pavements themselves. Public provided grit bins are most commonly found near high risk areas of minors roads that are not gritted with gritting lorries. In addition to public use grit bins, private use grit bins are growing in popularity too. These will generally have some type of locking mechanism to prevent the grit being stolen.  Grit bins are manufactured from either polypropylene or fibreglass for durability and are available in a wide range of capacities from as small as 25 litre capacity to 400 litre capacity.

A range of equipment is available for clearing snow. These include snow shovels and wheeled snow pushers. Snow shovels have are designed to be corrosion resistant and typically have a large  polypropylene scoop which is lightweight and shatterproof.  The wheeled snow pushers will break up snow and push it away to the desired destination.
