Hemorrhoids, also known as pile, are small, blood-filled swellings in and around the anus. These swellings are caused by dilated veins of the rectum and anus. Hemorrhoids cause anal bleeding, itching and discomfort. Hemorrhoids-Causes, Type, Symptoms, Prevention and Treatments, Explained in a Layman’s Way is the focus of this article.
Hemorrhoids are caused by pressure in the anal or rectal veins due to constipation and straining during bowel movement. Other factors that may be responsible for hemorrhoids are a low fiber diet, sitting or standing too much especially sitting on the toilet too long, obesity or overweight, heavy lifting or any strenuous activity, pregnancy as a result of carrying the baby and from child delivery and loss of muscle tone due to old age or rectal surgery.
The type of hemorrhoids depends on where it occurs. Basically there are:
Internal Hemorrhoids. The internal hemorrhoids involve the veins in the rectum and usually do not hurt. There may be bleeding resulting from damaged veins because of hardness of the stool.
Prolapsed Hemorrhoids. Prolapsed hemorrhoids stretch down until they bulge outside the anus. They may go back inside the rectum by themselves and can be pushed back inside, in which case care needs to be taken to avoid infection.
External hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids are located at the anal opening. They are characterised by abnormal growth around the rectal region. They can be itching or painful. External Hemorrhoids sometimes can crash and bleed.
The symptoms for hemorrhoids vary for each type. However, the following may indicate the presence of hemorrhoids in the body. Pain, itching or mucus discharge following bowel movement, a sensation that the rectum is not yet completely emptied after a bowel movement-in a situation of large hemorrhoids, feeling a lump in the affected area, appearance of bright-red blood as a small stain on toilet paper or as a slow trickle for a shot duration of time after bowel movement.
There are many treatment alternatives available for treating, preventing and curing hemorrhoids. In most cases, Hemorrhoids can be controlled by simple measures like change of diet by taking a high fiber diet-fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, drinking plenty of fluids-10 glasses of water a day is okay and ideal.
