Useful Information for You on Product Photography
Glossy pages and glorified products – this is what the world of advertising is based on. If the products do not appeal to the prospective consumers who will judge their decisions based on what it appears to be in the catalogue or, in other advertising platforms, there is every possibility that the product may not receive any response at all. So many products have gone out of market because of substandard advertisement in which photography always had a major role to play. This is one reason why, companies make a very careful selection of only the highly qualified and experienced photographers when it comes to product photography. This is not the job of any layman. Had it been so, then any odd enthusiast would have made it as champion photographer in no time.
The most important aspect of photography, quite undoubtedly is the camera. There are many types of cameras that the professionals use to get the best details in every picture they take. Be it in the darkness or, in light, moving objects or, still photography, quality of cameras is non negotiable when product photography is in question. All cameras do not have the same features. Some may be better for photographing moving objects as compared to still photos, and vice versa or, both. Since the picture of a product is the most important aspect in advertising the same, professional photographers usually go for those that are best suitable to the concerned object to be advertised.
While cameras are the first step to good pictures of products to be advertised, there are many other factors that affect the quality of pictures. Studio lighting is one of them. No matter how good the camera is and how advanced in technology the lens are, without proper lighting, no camera will be able to deliver best results. Very harsh day light can affect product picture quality. Similarly, when the lights are very low the product picture will never be appealing as it will turn out dull and flat. Harsh lights tend to produce very prominent shadows which may not be the best requisite for pictures. Soft lights on the other hand produce very soft shadows which are almost imperceptible.
Hot lights are usually used for photographing small products. These are the tungsten lights which are named “hot lights” because of the fact that they are often around 500 to 800 watts, and are thus ‘hot’. These lights are not usually powerful enough to be used to photograph human models, however, they can be very efficient in photographing small products. Now if, some photographer goes on to use such studio lighting for human models, the picture may not have very high quality. These lights can also disturb the vision of those in the shoot as they shine too much and are also very hot. Cool lights can be a better option as they negate most of the bad effects of hot lights. Flash lights are of course the current favorite of the photographers. These are far easier to use and counter the negative effects of hot and fluorescent lights.
