There are thousands of articles posted every day on sites such as this one about why your company needs to hire an SEO agency to work on your website; what SEO can do for you; why SEO is the way forward for your company. All too often these articles are full of jargon, and often they can be a little patronising to say the least. Telling a client what they want or need when it comes to their own business and expecting them to just agree because they don’t understand is the order of the day with many article writers. It’s a worthwhile enterprise; but only if you really know what it is.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. So far so good. What an SEO agency does to be able to call themselves an SEO agency is less straightforward. The first thing to do is a little tweaking of your website. A good SEO agency will be able to leave your site exactly as they found it; to the casual eye at least. You’ve spent a lot of money on a web designer, and you’ve worked with them for a long time getting your site just right; the last thing you want is a company who say they can increase your profits – without really telling you how they’re going to do it – going in to the delicate coding of your site and ripping it to bits under the pretence it’s going to make it easier to find for your potential customers.

Instead, a qualified SEO agency will be able to just alter the things that matter; things that most customers don’t even notice are there, and are regularly things you’re not sure why they are there; things like page names and descriptions, and descriptions of pictures, as well as a hundred other little things that are hidden around your site, and you’ll be able to see results over a relatively short period of time when it comes to your rankings in search engines, without seeing any superficial damage to your site. If anything, a skilled SEO agency will be able to make it more functional for you without really charging you more than their basic consultancy fee.

It’s a myth that some SEO companies try to sell to you (and some have been fined a great deal when it comes out that it’s not true) that they can get you to the top of the search engine rankings overnight. It’s simply not true: SEO takes time. But you should know that any company willing to spend that much time with your business in mind is almost certainly going to help you in any way they can.
