The DeltaWIng: Forward Thinking Race Cars

For those who are in love with racing, NASCAR, Indy 500 and other racing series, then you are in luck because just this week a brand new concept has finally hit the track, and resulted in abrand new type of racing car. Called the DeltaWing, the race car debuted in Atlanta featuring Michelin tires, and it is a lightweight version of the older, heavier racing cars we are all familiar with seeing on the track.

This new car is a needle nose meaning that the car is shaped as a pair of needle nose pliers would be, it is narrow in the front while being a bit wider in the back. Originally supposed to be a  one seater, the released version can fit two, but not very comfortably. The makers of the car promise that it will reach maximum performance, and that it will outrun the typical racing carts of the day, even though it is so lightweight. Nevertheless, because of its very light body, the DeltaWing gets some serious mileage to a single gallon of gas, and it is rumored that its fuel economy can outlast that of an electric car while being almost as clean.

The engine features an engine with four cylinders, and it is turbocharged, but even though it runs on only half the horsepower that the Audi R18 does, the Le Mans organizers accepted the car for its Garage 56 program. This program features new, up and coming cars that are designed using innovative technology and allows the cars to race in the same races, but in different classes than a traditional race would allow cars of this size. Designed by Ben Bowlby, the DeltaWing will be campaigning with Son Panoz, the American Le Mans Series owner, in addition to Highcroft Racing, Dan Gurney’s All American Racers, and others during a stint in the American Le Mans series races.
