Tips for Using Submersible Pumps
Submersible pumps are utility pumps that can be used for a wide array of different jobs such as emptying a swimming pool or draining a flooded basement. Regardless of its function, here are ten tips for starting up a submersible pump to ensure proper and safe use.
Make sure the control wiring for the moisture detection system in the pump is separate from the motor’s power wires. Otherwise, false warnings of moisture detection may occur in the pump.
Before you use the pump, it is critical to make sure the moisture detection system is hooked up correctly or you may inadvertently void the manufacturer’s warranty.
Prior to switching on the pump for the first time, reach into the suction and turn the impeller manually; this ensures the mechanical seals of the pump are still properly seated and were not disturbed during shipping or prior to installation.
If a warning indicator on the pump indicates moisture breached the motor seal, allow the pump to run for 24 hours before using it; this allows plenty of time for the moisture to dispel and the warning indicator to turn off.
If the water you will be pumping has a large amount of debris or sediment, make sure a filter screen is attached to ensure the debris isn’t dumped in the outfall area.
To prime the pump and make the initial start up easier, pour a cup of water into the pump and let it pump through.
Before turning the pump on, make sure it is placed in the deepest part of water-filled area.
To avoid electrocution and dangerous conditions, make sure the electrical outlet or power source connected to the submersible pump is above the water level and remains dry (unless the pump is solar powered).
Ideally, the outfall area of the pump should be lower than water-filled area. This will help the water flow smoothly through the attached hose or pipe into the outfall area.
Make sure the pump is comprised of corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel (such as the popular little giant pumps). This will ensure the pump is highly durable and robust from the very first day you use it.
