The Many Uses of Copper
Copper is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth. There are many uses for copper and the copper ore that it derives from. The three main uses of copper are in electronics, architecture and industry, as well as in making alloys and other metal mixtures. It is one of the oldest metals that is still used on an everyday basis, and it was used thousands of years ago to form strong metals such as bronze to create other materials.
The primary use of copper in modern times is in electrical applications. The most notable example of copper use is wire. Almost all wire that is run through homes is made of copper because copper is an excellent conductor of electricity and it allows the electricity to flow relatively easily. Aluminum is also sometimes used in wires, but because copper has such excellent conductivity features, it is almost always preferred. In addition, copper is used in circuit boards for the same reason – it has great conductivity which means the electricity will flow with ease.
Another area in which copper is used extensively is architecture and industry. It is extremely waterproof and therefore it was often used as roofing material in ancient times. In modern industry, it is sometimes used in welding and soldering, and can be used in brazing applications as well. Lightning rods are also made from copper because the copper can easily divert the lightning away from the building into the ground instead. Copper and copper ore also have numerous plumbing applications and many of the fittings and pipes used in plumbing applications are made especially from copper.
The final application in which copper sees the most use is in the creation of various copper alloys. There are numerous alloys in existence today, but the most common copper alloy is by far brass. Brass is similar to the ancient metal bronze that was used for thousands of years to create everything from statues to buildings.
Copper and tin alloys are the most usable and applicable metals in modern industry. They are widely used in the electronics and machinery industry because of their unsurpassed conductivity and lightweight, meaning it can be used in just about any application including aerospace area. Copper is also used in the plumbing business to form pipes and fittings as well as fixtures because it is very reliable and waterproof as well.
