What Is Mobile Marketing and How Can It Benefit Your Company?

Mobile marketing is a fairly self-explanatory term, generally referring to marketing campaigns that are delivered directly to the mobile phones or mobile devices of potential customers. This can be accomplished in a number of ways; the most popular being via SMS (Short Messaging Service, usually called text messaging), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Marketing via SMS has been around a little longer than the other two, due to the other advances in mobile technology being more recent than text messaging, and it quite rightly seems to be on its way out. People are increasingly viewing advertising messages sent to them via SMS as spam, and it is becoming more annoying, and more often ignored. It also costs money for companies to send messages via SMS, especially in the quantities required to see any kind of results, and even if the advertising company has a deal with a mobile service carrier, it will still be more expensive than either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which, apart from basic service charges that are sometimes applied, are generally free for companies to use.

It is Bluetooth marketing that is perhaps gaining the most momentum out of the three of these mediums, due to the relatively low cost of hardware and the fact that it is free to send messages via Bluetooth, as well as the ease of which it can be converted to an advertising medium. Once a customer walks into range of a Bluetooth transmitter, he or she will receive a message asking if they want to download the content that the advertiser is offering. This content can be used variously as a discount which can be presented to a cashier at the point of sale, or simply as a more conventional advertisement, designed to attract customers to a store or website.

If your company is interested in attracting more customers, then chances are you will be looking at different methods of advertising, including the traditional direct mail campaigns and corporeal advertisements in newspapers and on billboards. Mobile marketing can eliminate the cost of printing these advertisements, whilst allowing you to reach as many potential customers as there are in the vicinity, eliminating waste. It also means that you don’t have to pay someone to stand and leaflet; by simply placing the Bluetooth transmitter in an area with high footfall, your message can be viewed by every single person that passes, providing they have their Bluetooth switched on. Since nearly everyone has a mobile phone these days, it makes sense to use it to reach people – that’s what it’s designed for after all.
