How to Use The Aussie Slang
Australia is a wonderful country which has a unique set of cultural traditions. Aussie is mainly used for an Australian citizen but still it is the short form of Australian. Their relatively distinct culture has determined their own slang. It is popular to most of the people because of the media sources. The “Crocodile Dundee” is what most people associate the Aussie slang to.
Paul Hogan and the aforementioned move increased the popularity of the Australian speech. It sounded cool from his mouth. When searching about a move-out cleaning company I was redirected to the Aussie’s so called end of lease cleaning. This made me interested in researching even further about the speech in Australia. After finding that for end of lease cleaning Melbourne is the best city I was greeted by “g’day” on the street. I quite enjoy what Australians love to say : “How is it going” but again shortened as a single word.
Something we can often regard as a nickname is something absolutely normal for Australians and I quite enjoy it. As most people know they put “o” or “azza” in the end of a name. Calling Dave “Dave-o” sound good to me. However, some people think it is annoying and old fashioned.
Another term that is accepted in English as well is calling a person “mate” no matter of his gender. However, what is even more strange is calling a group of women is referred as “those guys over there”.
Furthermore, Australians like to shorten the words. I get up in the morning and enjoy my brekkie with a cup of juice-o. If my day goes ace I would definitely drink some amber fluid. My blokes call me Dave-o. So if you are considering to travel to Australia it is good to know some of the slang there. I was amazed at first, as when I found out about the end of lease cleaning Melbourne, but later I got used to it and now I am really enjoying it.
