Like a non-artist, once i look into modern art, In my opinion of art that has got previously been created, trying to reflect in a larger scope of history, I believe of recent as in one more Century. In several ways, this is correct, but not completely. In the art world, different art styles are generally known as -isms. This probably sounds familiar from an old college humanities class. It is likely you found out about Naturalism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, and better. Well, many of these -isms are major category heads, with most sub-isms beneath them, and that’s exactly true with Modernism.
Modernism was a great encompassing movement that can take in other movements on top of that. Modernism happened within the first area of the Twentieth century, and even though sub-categories under Modernism may very well be like the other person, they do hold in keeping the rejection of Naturalism and Academicism, both styles which followed rigid rules of painting that may be taught going to school, understanding that closely resembled the natural world. Instead Modernists favored experimental art.
Today’s world was changing, so art were required to change on top of that. Modern art would explore the new modern world, and artists thought we would accomplish this within ways. But inspite of the type of expression chosen, all forms are an exploration of each artist’s own vision of life in their own personal way. Most of the sub-isms of Modernism, and whatever they explore, include: Expressionism which explores emotions and states on the mind, Constructivism which works with social function, Surrealism efforts to express the unconscious mind, and Cubism which explores the type of representation.
These are simply some of the trends flanked by Modernism, some can be different, while others overlap together with each other, but to any or all these artists, art became ways to discover truth, whether it’s a contemporary truth of Futurism, or an universal truth of Suprematism. They each tried, I their particular way, to get answers to fundamental concerns the nature of art and human experience.
Modernism lasted two to three quarters from your 20th century, by the 1970’s, modern artists were moving onto Post Modernism. Surprisingly, it had become architects who took the lead within the growth of Post Modernism, but lots of the Post Modern visual art is often a criticism of modern society.
Understanding a bit about Modernism and Post Modernism is helpful when discussing modern art. Plus, it is great to know the lingo of one’s art world, to implement it correctly, especially to stay away from confusion when talking with experts.
So on the question of what is modern art? Towards non-artist, all art created during the last 100 years is modern art, because modern refers to the present, or recent years. Modern art, i believe, includes every one of those -isms. Modern art would not directly resemble the individual, but is abstract. It’s always trickier to understand but sometimes understanding is often a mute point, the art shall be enjoyed.
