Gun Safekeeping Tips: Your way to make your guns last
Hunting has always been my passion. I enjoyed exploring the wilds as I enjoy savoring nature’s bounty and generosity. But before going for a trip, I see to it that I bring the best hunting equipment with me- my functional guns (from their safe where they have been properly taken care) and durable scopes such as the Nikon Coyote Special Scope. It has Easy-to-use positive click reticle adjustments for quicker and easy maintenance of your setting—even with heavy recoil. So much about pulling-off a great kill, this article will tell you about how I keep my guns safe and clean in storage.
I personally do not recommend lubricating entirely your gun when you keep them in storage. I only apply light coat of lubricant to the exterior. The main reason for not lubricating the entire part is that lubricant can damage your guns especially when there are sudden changes in the temperatures in your area.
Be careful in choosing the right metal preservatives in the market. You may choose high-end preservatives that have micro-film on the metal for non-greasy look but to some old fashioned, they use the old time brands as Birchwood-Casey’s Sheath or RIG grease just when they want to see the preservatives on the metal.
Moreover, you may cut pieces of a shammy into hand-sized wiping patches and load it with the preservatives. With this, you may wipe down the shammy leaves so easily especially when a rusting has been handled. Storing your guns in fabric, leather cases or their original boxes is a big NO-NO! These items attact moisture so it is important to store them in safe and well-ventilated areas so that dry air can circulate around them freely.
It is highly recommended to buy Gun safe. It provides good protection for the theft and keeps the gun from your children. Gun safe also provide good ventilation for your guns. It can either come with either combination or electronic locks and multiple locking points to secure your guns. There are guns safes that are fire-proof which will protect your rifles in case of a house fire.
If you already have a Gun safe, make sure to add electric heating element accessory in it or a light bulb. This will allow warm and dry air to circulate around your safe, thus, keeping your rifles away from moisture. In my case, I apply the 65/65 rule for temperature and humidity. This is an ideal rule for keeping your gun safe and clean. A heating element is also an excellent idea for traditional closed-door gun cabinets.
Using your common sense is probably the best way to keeping your guns clean and safe. When storing your guns with their muzzle down, make sure that the muzzle lube will make its way out of the muzzle rather than going into the fire control system or the stock.
Now these are some of the simple tips on how to keep safe your guns to make them last for years and of course to make sure that you will have a successful hunting trip.
