How I Met Your Mother: “Field Trip”

Robin is still in therapy with Kal Penn (whose character’s name is Kevin, but you’re always going to remember him as Kal Penn), and she’s really enjoying it. After a couple of sessions, Kal says he’s moving to Alaska and that he cannot treat Robin anymore, which really upsets her. Her sadness turns to confusion, however, when she runs into him at a diner. It turns out that Kal has to stop treating Robin because he’s attracted to her. After a week of pretending not to date, Robin and Kal decide to go on a real date. Everyone thinks that this is a terrible idea. Even Ted’s students unanimously vote that the relationship is “creepy.” Eventually, Robin and Kal Penn believe that it’s creepy, too. It seems like their relationship in How I Met Your Mother is over, but Robin shows up in Kal’s office and takes on the role of his therapist for two sessions to even things out, since she deserves to be happy and wants to be with him.

Marshall is afraid that his boss, the infamously tough environmental lawyer Garrison Cootes (aka Martin Short) has “gone soft.” In a meeting with a lake-destroying pharmaceutical company, Cootes accepts a ridiculously low settlement offer. When Cootes keeps celebrating the low offer, Marshall gets very upset and scolds the entire company. Cootes takes Marshall aside and says that it’s too late to save the planet and that life on Earth will not exist in ten years. When Marshall goes to see Cootes the next day, he tells his boss (who is clearly crazy) that he’s not giving up and will reject the pharmaceutical company’s offer. Cootes arrives at Marshall’s meeting with the pharmaceutical company and rejects the offer himself. Future Ted tells us that Marshall and Cootes save the planet. I hope it has something to do with becoming superheroes.
