Installing terrazzo
One of the mostly used materials for the floor designing is the terrazzo. The terrazzo is not only used is floor covering but it is also used for wall, roof and other places. This is one of the most popular and widely used floor covering. Terrazzo is one of the best floors covering till date. Most people who construct their new houses prefer terrazzo over other floor covering because of its elegance and durability. The terrazzo is not a new type of floor covering but is an age old one. One can see this floor covering in old palaces and historic buildings. The terrazzo can be made of many shapes and this makes it quite popular among the masses.
The terrazzo is actually a mixture of different composite materials poured in together. It consists of different sized chips, marble, granite and glass which is poured in the binder and is thus mixed together. The surface is uniformly textured and the resulting pieces are cut to the suitable size. This is the way how terrazzo is prepared commercially and then supplied to the local marble or stone stores where they can be bought.
The problem that arises with regard to the terrazzo is that most of the people do not know how to make it. It is not a difficult job if one gives adequate time to understand the procedure. First of all, the floor concrete on which the floor covering is to be placed is prepared. This procedure is time consuming but not difficult. Once the concrete is prepared it is laid down in the areas is to be laid down. Then one should wait for this floor screed to dry up. After the floor is dry the aluminum strips are laid down. The floor screed is actually wooden floated and so, the bonding between the chips and the cement is made stronger. The overall thickness at the end of the procedure of the chipping finish is about ten millimeter.
Once the above mentioned process is completed the laying of the terrazzo finish is started. The marble chips which are to be laid down are first mixed with the cement. The chips are mixed in the required proportions and the pozzolana cement is actually then put into mix the materials. To increase the consistency of the mixture is added with water according to the requirement. The terrazzo is then spread in to the bays until a perfect level of surface is obtained. The mixture with cement as well as marble is left in order to harden regarding almost a week after which it is ground and the fillings are poured in. after the whole process the surface is cleaned and then it is again allowed to dry.
This is the process of preparing the terrazzo. For installing the terrazzo one needs to first make the floor ready to bond with the marble. First of all, the surface where the terrazzo is to be installed is cleaned up. The surface is cleaned and then a binder is placed on the floor which would allow the marble to adhere with the floor. This binder is easily available in the market now. Before that the binder was prepared by mixing together different components. Once the binder is ready, the marble is cut in to the adequate shapes and sizes. Once the required shapes are obtained the terrazzo is laid down on the binder and then, it is allowed to dry. The drying process is time consuming and is normally about a day or two.
After the drying of the marble, the spaces between the marbles are filled up with mainly white cement. This makes sure that the surface looks smooth and no space is left for the marble to root out. After this process, the marble is again left for drying. After the drying of the filler the terrazzo is buffed up. This makes the terrazzo shiny and increases its beauty. The surface of the whole floor is buffed to make it shiny and look good. For this purpose, special machines are utilized which are designed for buffing the floors.
After the buffing is complete the terrazzo floors are ready. Due to the filler the surface of the floor looks smooth and due to the buffing of the floor the surface of the floor becomes shiny and hence more beautiful. The terrazzo is indeed a gift for all those who have some extra bucks to spend on their homes or for those who enjoy and love to beautify their houses.
