The Clever Vauxhall Astra
Vauxhall/Opel has been producing the Astra since 1979; it is a small family car available with 3 or 5 doors as well as an estate model. In certain generations the Astra was also available as a sporty convertible. Since 2009 the Mark 6 Astra has been in production, it is built here in the UK at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port.
The Vauxhall Astra in Stroud has taken many of its design cues from its bigger brother – the Vauxhall Insignia. The new Astra has a much more luxury feel to it and has a number of clever storage solutions. The guys at Vauxhall have identified the 20 most carried items in a car and made a storage solution around them.
There are 9 engine options to choose from in the new Astra range, five petrols and four diesels. The petrol range kicks off with two 1.4 litres with 86 or 99 bhp, then there is a turbo version of the 1.4 litre engine with 138 bhp. There is a 1.6 litre with 113bhp and a range topping 1.6 turbo with 178 bhp. The four engines in the diesel range include two 1.7 litre units with either 108 or 123 bhp and a mighty 2.0 litre with 158 bhp. There is a small 1.3 litre diesel also available.
In June of this year Vauxhall unveiled the new Astra ecoFLEX, it uses the 1.7 litre engine with 123 bhp. Vauxhall’s ecoFLEX technology has reduced the CO2 emissions of the diesel engine down to less than 100g/km and it can do 76.3 miles to the gallon. The ecoFLEX models is also fitted with start-stop technology.
