General Introduction of Tourbillon Watch
Tourbillon, a kind of clock and watch speed adjusting device, was invented in 1795 by Mr Breguet who was a master in clock and watch industry in Switzerland. Breguet invented tourbillon aiming to regulate the deviation of watches and clocks caused by gravity. Tourbillon represents the highest standard process of mechanical watches. Tourbillon watch is always regarded as “The King of Watches” because its unique operation mode has propelled dynamic art of watches as well as clocks to reach the pinnacle. The creativity of tourbillon lies on laying the escapement into a carriage and the escapement revolving around the axis of balance wheel. In such case, deviation of various parts of watches and clocks will offset. The principle of tourbillon describes that as a watch or clock is in vertical direction, it can make up the effect made by gravity. The principal seems quite simple but it’s not an easy job to put it into practice.
As tourbillon watches have been improving and innovating over time, they are devided into three generations. The first generation is tourbillon invented by Abraham Louis Breguet in 1795 and it is consisted of tourbillon’s carriage and tourbillon’s bridge. In the combination, balance’s bridge should revolve together with flywheel. The first generation of tourbillon is devided into coaxial mode and eccentric mode. Flying tourbillon is the second generation created by Alfred Helwing in 1927 and it could work without tourbillon bridge. Therefore, mystery and dynamic art of tourbillon watches are improved. The third generation is called mystery tourbillon made by a Chinese named Kiu Tai Yu in 1993. Mystery tourbillon even could work without both tourbillon’s carriage which is indispensable for the first two generations and tourbillon’s bridge. In addition, balance wheel could revolve separately so the weight of tourbillon is reduced half. Kiu Tai Yu also first substituted metal which is made of balance wheel plywood before for sapphire glass. It is no doubt that tourbillon of the third generation is more mysterious and eye-catching.
