Arranging Information For Expository Speeches
The first step in preparing an essay expository speech is to choose your topic, narrow it, and decide what your specific purpose will be. For example, if you choose newspaper illustration for your topic, you might narrow it to newspaper illustration during any war. Your purpose might be to tell the class hoe woodblock engravings based on battlefield sketches were to illustrate news reports of battles during any civil war. Since your listeners will not have a written copy of your speech to follow, it is especially important to arrange your material in patterns that will help them understand you. In chronological patterns the elements of the speaker’s information are arranged in the order in which they occurred. If you told your audience about the president’s visit by describing his breakfast with the mayor, hi luncheon speech, and his afternoon visit to the hospital, you would be using chronological organization. Spatial patterns organize the information by presenting it in terms of physical spaces that are familiar to the audience. A speaker, who described how to decorate a wedding cake, starting with the bottom layer and ending with miniature wedding bells on top, would be using spatial organization. So would a speaker who described agriculture in Kenya by speaking about the fruits and vegetables grown in each area of the country.
A speaker using a topical pattern will discuss the significant ideas, people, and events that cluster around each topic in his or her speech before moving on to the next.
