Dos and Don’ts in Maintaining a watch
When we are looking with admiration at a watch on a person’s wrist, all we see is how pretty, and special it is. But we should also be aware how effort and care the owner has put into its maintenance since its purchase. After I lost a most cute watch to careless maintenance or rather a lack of it several years ago, now I treat my watch with careful attention in order to lengthen its life.
First I read the manual as to some special needs of my watch and keep it for future reference. In some cases it also points out the maintenance intervals
To keep your watch clean and from corrosion, I clean my watch periodically. And different parts are cleaned in different ways. To clean the watch case, I usually wipe it with lint-free cloth to cleanse it carefully and in the meanwhile use a toothpick to extract the dirt and grim in the crevice. If my watch is water-proof, I sometimes wash it in the warm water before drying it with a soft cloth. Besides, the straps also needs cleaning. For metal straps, I wash it in warm water with a little soap in it, extract dirt with a toothbrush and then dry it with a soft cloth. For leather straps, I wipe it with a dry cloth softly.
Now comes the don’ts part. Never submerge the leather straps of a watch in water or wet it, for liquid can do damages to leather. Even when the watch is waterproof, don’t submerge it in hot water when you are showering or in a hot tub, because the metal parts will expand at a different rate than the rubber gaskets when exposed to extreme heat. Don’t put the watch near moth balls or insect chemical agent for the chemical ingredients in them can damage the watch.
Maintaining a watch is extremely important whether to keep its exterior looks, to ensure its accuracy or keep its longevity. So if you want your watch to always look new and glamorous, you should treat it with double care and learn to maintain it in a good way.
