Plan a hiking holiday at Giants Castle!
Giants Castle is the best place to go if you want to enjoy some hiking (whatever your fitness level), climbing or if you want to see the bearded vulture – there are so few of these particular birds left, that if you are a birdwatcher, you would probably know that the best time to go and visit them is during their feeding season between May and September. There are also other endangered species to view in the area.
Giants Castle is so named because the escarpments and mountains form the shape of a sleeping giant. It is basically a grassy plateau situated in the valleys of the Drakensberg, and you will be sure to enjoy the awesome scenery there. One fascinating part of the scenery is of course the famed rock art in the Main Caves Museum. Visit this spot and learn some more about the interesting traditions and lifestyle of the San people.
For those interested in hiking, you can challenge yourself by trying out the hike to the Bannerman Hut, or you can take the easier Champagne Pools circular walk – it starts at the main gate of Giants Castle and leads you to lovely pools where you can swim and fish to your heart’s content! Don’t forget to pack some picnic supplies in your backpack and take the opportunity to relax a little in one of these spots. Your little ones will definitely be happy to splash around a little! The scenery is varied enough to ensure you will never be bored for something to look at – grassy slopes, cliffs, precipices, (try and climb those if you dare!) wetlands and many streams. It is truly a place to revel in nature’s beauty and life itself.
A word about the weather – it can change in what seems like minutes, so never go anywhere without taking a warm jacket with you. You can have clouds, sunshine and rain all in one day around here! You can access Giants Castle via gravel roads from Mooi River, or from Estcourt – both are on the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban.
As for Giants Castle accommodation, you can choose from a number of places in the nearby areas – there are guest houses and B&B’s to suit your budget. Most rates are reasonable and will not break your budget! The main thing is that you come and see the fabulous views of the Drakensberg!
