Vans selling well throughout the UK

2011 as predicted is proving to be a very difficult year for car dealers, manufacturers and buyers. The Tsunami and Earthquakes in Japan earlier on in the year created further problems as Honda, Toyota and other Japanese manufacturers had to shut down their plants for weeks. Japanese component manufacturer also had to shut down causing back logs for many manufacturers not just Japanese ones.

Looking at the figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders the light commercial van sector is fairing much better than the car sector. New van registrations went up by 9.4% in September compared to the same period in 2010, which made up part of the 8.8% increase witnessed in the commercial market as a whole.

38,644 new vans were sold in September 2011, with the biggest rises in pick-up trucks with 23.2% and 2.0 to 2.5-tonne vans with 22.5%. Year to date for 2011 254,054 vans have been registered, which is up 18.5% compared to last year. as a result of more vans there has been a surge in van servicing in Kent.

SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everitt believes that rising fuel costs is somehow having a positive effect on van sales. He also said, “Confidence returned to the commercial vehicle market in 2011 and the September market continues the upward trend. The future state of the economy is certainly a concern, but it’s clear that owners and operators are currently investing in new, fuel-efficient vehicles to help weather the storm of high fuel prices.”

I think what Paul Everitt is implying is that commercial users are trading in their old vans which are not as fuel efficient for new vans which have very impressive MPG figures.
