How to Pick out and Carefully Use Car Ramps
Automobile ramps are used to elevate the end of motor vehicles so you can easily access beneath the motor vehicle. This eliminates the necessity of having to purchase costly floor jacks. However, when you are using a car ramp you have to be very sober so as not to injure yourself or someone else. This happens sometimes when auto ramps are faulty.
When you are ready to use a car ramp, it is advisable for you to apprise persons that are within twenty feet in proximity that you are going to be doing so. Everyone should stay away from the vehicle until you have turned off the engine.
If the front end of the vehicle is being raised, then the wheel ramps should be situated wherein one is in front of each tire. On the other hand, if you are raising the back of the vehicle, then the wheel ramps should be placed behind each tire. The edges of the ramp must be placed stably under the tires and you will need to ensure that they are accurately lined up where they should be.
You will then need to go into the car, putting it into the lowest gear as you let it bit by bit roll up the wheel ramps. It will be necessary to give just enough pressure so the accelerator so the car can go over the grade to get to the level segment of the auto ramp. Your next foot should always be shadowing the brake so you can stop the vehicle quickly if the need arises.
As soon as the car gets to the top of the car ramp where it is level, then you will need to instantaneously apply the brakes. When the car comes to a stop, apply the emergency brake, turn off the ignition and then remove your keys.
When you come out of the vehicle you will need to push wheel wedges under the tires on both ends of the vehicle so that it does not move while on the car ramp. There should be no distance between the wedge and the tire.
Two jacks should be placed beneath the end of the vehicle that has been elevated. You will then need to make adjustments to the heights of the support legs that are modifiable. This modification is done until the support brackets that are on top of the support legs are resting securely against the vehicle’s axle. It is imperative that you ensure that the jack stands you are using is appropriate for the gross weight of your vehicle or exceeds it; the latter being what is usually preferred.
When you are done with the alignment and are now ready to drive the car off the auto ramp; firstly tell everyone around you that you will be driving off the car ram so they can stand clear. After doing that, you will need to remove the jack stands and the wheels wedges, and then start the vehicle while holding down the pedal of the brake. The emergency brake should then be released and the car should again be placed in it lowest gear. As you come off the car ramp, take your feet slowly off the pedal of the brake; using it to control the speed of the vehicle as you descend the car ramps.
