The Great Kalahari Desert

Kalahari is a very vast expanse of desert space in South Africa. There is that interior plateau that includes a large land of Botswana and also some parts of Namibia. The great Kalahari Desert is the basin of brown sand that spills over the edges of the Orange River to ahead in the surfacing countries. The literal meaning of the name of the great desert stands as “great thirst”. The above fact pretty much describes everything about the desert and the conditions of it.

Once upon a dry time, Kalahari Desert was a very vast and mighty desert which was having such awful heat and dryness in it that people feared the name of it even and nobody in their right mind ever thought about going to it or crossing it. But as time has passed so has the desert’s ferociousness and the drastic condition are not the same as they once were. It doesn’t even classify as a true desert any more. The geology remains near the same though but the climate and several other key factors have changed a lot. Now it stays known as the fossil desert and not the awe inspiring and fear inducing burning sand desert. The temperature variation has changed to absolutely new degrees than what it once was or what it used to be.

Now it even goes down to the 0 degree perimeter of cold temperature in the winters which is a first for deserts of any kind. When you go visit the Kalahari, you will see a stretched sea of golden brown raving sand everywhere. It is indeed a very beautiful sight to look at, to an extent that it mesmerizes you with awe. The central regions of the desert have plenty of thorn trees and also some of those Acacias that cover the entire region. There is a famous place named as the Central Kalahari Game Reserve that was built back in times for the protection of the San Bushmen species but which stayed closed until recently although now it is in working condition.

Kalahari is a fossil desert receiving 250 ml rain annually. During summers the temperature is as high as 45C and as low as20. Average temperature ranges between the two and is quite moderate. The desert is an unpredictable place. It can rain in a day to flood the place and next day can be dry as ever. Sometimes its rains so much to give rise to vegetation and sometimes it feels as this place has never seen any rain in its history. This is the nature and mystery of a desert and Kalahari Desert is no different in this mystery. With a number of flora and fauna all over the desert, we see many animals and reptiles as well. It is one of the world’s greatest wildlife paradises. Jackals, warthogs, meekest, lions and species of reptiles and birds are seen commonly in the deserts. All these animals add to the natural beauty of the desert and its mesmerizing and mysterious nature.
