A Beautiful Array of Muslin Fabric
Muslin fabric has many uses, as screens to divide a room, to provide a painting medium for background scenery, domestic cleaning cloths and light airy clothing. One area that it is used extensively is in the photographer’s studio, because of the ease that it can be dyed or painted this fabric makes ideal backdrops and many professional studios use it for colored backdrops in portrait work. To prepare muslin fabric for painting it may be necessary to wash and press it to remove the creases.
If a large backdrop is going to be used then probably the best way to paint muslin fabric is to lay it on a large tarpaulin, first the main background color should be added this can be done in acrylic and could be several coats depending on the depth of color that is required. To get a mottled effect then once the paint is dry using a contrasting color prepare a mixture of paint and place it on a tray so that a sponge can easily be dipped into the mixture then the sponge is just lightly printed onto the background color.
If something a little more intricate is planned like a scene then projecting a picture of the background onto the cloth and then predefining the outline first is a great way to accurately recreate the image. To complete the backdrop using a matte finish to keep it free from dust is advisable especially if it will be in use for some while. Nowadays with the digital studio increasingly becoming used as a medium for backgrounds for images, painting muslin fabric in a plain blue allows a photographer greater freedom to place the subject in any location in the world just by pasting onto a suitable backdrop.
This is just one of the many uses of muslin fabric, because it is a light and inexpensive fabric it is easily replaced, photographers and scenery designers use it to create great backdrops for studios, film backdrop and stage plays sometimes with many people working on the same background. Because it is easy to store and wrinkles just fall out when it is hung is what makes muslin fabric relatively maintenance free. So if you are a photographer who is looking to branch out and maybe start your own studio, investing in some muslin fabric to create your own homemade backdrops is an expense well worth considering.
