Diesel-electric hybrid car from Citroën

In the car industry a new year generally signals the launch of new car models – either something brand new we have yet to see or a new version of an old and trusted model.

Citroën is no exception and come early 2012 their new premium hatchback-saloon crossover, the Citroën DS5, will hit the forecourts here in the UK. This new offering from Citroen comes with a diesel-electric hybrid technology and is the biggest of the three cars in the new DS range. It is based on their current C5 model. The diesel-electric combination should mean emissions as low as 99g/km of CO2 which means below the 100g/km limit for paying car tax. Combined with a fuel economy of around 74mpg this model might prove popular for economy conscious families up and down the country. Citroën dealers in Kent and other regions might experience a surge in trade once the car hits the forecourts in March 2012.

In addition to low emissions and great fuel economy the car has a sporty look although performance is a bit on the average side. The car has a stubby nose and high window line with an upright driving position reminiscent of a crossover SUV. It does look funky though and inside it has futuristic looking toggles and dials which feel more like a premium addition than standard equipment. It has seating for five with ample room for three adults in the back seat and a boot capacity capable of accommodating a family of four.  Prices are expected to start at around £20,000 for the most basic model.

Once the car launches next year it will be interesting to see who actually buys this new offering. Citroën has aimed it at the executive segment and claims it has no direct rivals but it may just prove popular with families looking for something frugal yet stylish. Time will tell what really happens.
