The Difference between 32-Bit and 64-Bit

What type of computer operating system do you have? Is it a 32-bit or a 64-bit? Not quite sure?
Don’t sweat it—a large percentage of people aren’t familiar with details regarding their computer’s system. And most of the time this information isn’t really all that important.

There may come a time, however, when you find a software program that works only for 32-bit systems or only for 64-bit systems. If you don’t know the details about your operating system, how can you figure out if the program will work on your computer?

32-Bit and 64-Bit Systems
Computers with a 64-bit system can handle larger amounts of random access memory (RAM) and data more effectively than 32-bit systems. This is because this type of system is much newer and, therefore, has more highly-developed technology.

This does not mean, though, that all newer computers and laptops automatically have 64-bit operating systems. Manufacturers have been using 32-bit technology for over a decade and it is still quite common. Because much of the software that is available today is for 32-bit systems, many computers are sold with this operating system.

Finding your System Information
To see if your computer has a 32-bit or a 64-bit system, do the following steps:
• Click the Start button.
• Click on the Control Panel.
• Click on System.
A window will pop up that contains all of the basic information about your computer.

Facts about 32-Bit and 64-Bit
One of the most significant advantages to using a 64-bit system is that it can provide better graphics and more visual details. Also, 64-bit is usually backwards compatible. In other words, if you cannot find a software program created in a 64-bit version, you will likely be able to use the 32-bit version.
With 32-bit systems, finding compatible software is rather easy. After all, most of the software written in the past several years was written for this type of system. Computers with these systems, however, cannot typically be used 64-bit software. Also, because the computing world is steadily moving in the 64-bit direction, it is clear that the 32-bit versions will lose support at some point.
