Rod Aycox: Community Crusader
Since his decision to sponsor the Fourth Ward Health and Education Center for Youth in Houston, TX, Rod Aycox has earned recognition nationwide as a community crusader, though only Houston residents can fully appreciate the importance of the services provided at the Center, including its standing offer of transportation for those who need it.
The city of Houston extends over a large area, and it lacks an all-encompassing public transportation system. Thus, anyone without a car has difficulties getting around the city. It is for this reason that an offer of transportation – extended to older children and teens – deserves special recognition. Walking long distances is not realistic. It is not safe to travel by foot from Rice University to the other side of Hermann Park.
The Fourth Ward Health and Education Center for Youth sponsored by Rod Aycox provides far more than transportation alone. It is also home to youth teams and tournaments, a beautiful library, and computer labs. The philanthropic efforts of Rod Aycox and his wife Leslie extend far beyond this town on the Gulf of Mexico. Members of The Rod and Leslie Aycox Family Foundation realize that Houston’s buildings and streets – including the Medical Center – are not immune from the effects of natural disasters, and in 2011 the foundation donated over $25,000 towards the recovery efforts following the tornadoes in Missouri and Kansas.
