Family Downsizing
With the country in an economic crisis, times are hard and the incoming wages or salaries, etc just doesn’t seem to stretch as far as they use to do, most households are looking to save the extra pennies every which way they can. Many people are auditing themselves and are starting to look at their current spending level and where they can make sacrifices. Many families look at their car usage and some either downsize their vehicle while others move from being a two-car family to being a one-car family.
Downsizing you car or downsizing you car park is a fairly common way to try and reduce the overall spending on car ownership. If you own two cars you might consider selling one of them and trying to make do with one but for many families this transition, although financially tempting, might prove a very difficult one to practically manage. Families with kids need to get these to either school or nursery at the same time as the grownups have to go to work. And if one works and one is at home, who does the shopping if the worker has the car? It is probably easier for people who live in built up areas to cope with being a one car family than for people who live in rural areas where public transport is scarce.
So a better solution for a two car family looking to save money but remain friends is to swap one or both cars for something smaller and/or cheaper. This doesn’t necessary mean buying a supermini or a so-called city car, although something like an Abarth 500 might work as one of the family cars if the other one is bigger. The Abarth 500 is a 3-door hatchback performance model Fiat launched in 2008 so you should be able to visit an Abarth dealer and find something used and economical there.
If you do decide to downsize both cars, the second car you downsize should be to something which can fit the whole family. Ford have several options in the SUV range as have Vauxhall and both manufacturers will have cheaper used vehicles available on their forecourts if you don’t decide to go to a used car dealer instead.
By downsizing one or both cars you will hopefully get some money back from selling the cars you currently own and also save on fuel cost on whatever you decide to buy. Smaller cars are more frugal than larger cars and will usually also emit less CO2. And less emissions means less road tax which again leads to even more savings.
